When a reviewer catches an error, it takes ten seconds to note: the error category (missing dimension, wrong tolerance, incomplete callout), when in the process it was introduced, and whether the same error has appeared before.

After one month, a pattern emerges. Most engineers make the same five to seven errors repeatedly. Once identified, these personal error patterns become the top priority items in the checklist — the ones to look for first and most carefully.

Peer Review as a Separate Practice

Self-review has a structural limitation: the creator cannot fully escape their mental model of the part. Peer review — having a colleague review the drawing with no prior knowledge of the part — catches a different class of errors: ambiguities that the creator considered obvious, violations of manufacturing practice the creator was unaware of, and omissions that only appear when someone tries to machine or assemble from the drawing.
