Writing a Resume That Gets Past the First Screen

Most resumes are filtered by a recruiter or HR coordinator before they reach an engineer. Your resume needs to clear two hurdles: the non-technical screen and the technical screen. These require different things.

Structure and Length

For engineers with under ten years of experience, one page is the target. Over ten years, two pages is acceptable. Three pages is almost never justified. Every line should earn its place. Use reverse chronological order for experience. Skills sections should be near the bottom unless a specific technology is a hard requirement for the role.

Writing Strong Bullet Points

The most common mistake is writing responsibilities instead of achievements. Compare these two examples:

If you list FEA but have only run a tutorial, you will struggle in the interview. Better to list it with a qualifier: FEA (Ansys Mechanical, student/personal projects). This signals honesty, which engineers respect.

Tailoring Applications to the Job Description

Generic applications fail. Read the job description carefully and mirror the language. If the description mentions tolerance stack-up analysis, use that exact phrase if it applies to your work. Applicant tracking systems search for keyword matches. More importantly, it signals to the hiring engineer that you understand what the job actually involves.

Identify two or three specific technical requirements in the posting and address them directly in your cover letter or summary. Keep the cover letter short — three paragraphs maximum. The first paragraph states why you are interested in this specific role, not engineering in general. The second gives your strongest relevant example. The third is a call to action.

Preparing for the Technical Interview

Most mechanical engineering interviews include at least one technical component: a whiteboard problem, a design review of your portfolio, or a live CAD test. Prepare for all three.

Whiteboard Design Problems

Common prompts include: Design a bracket to hold X load, or What would you check first if this shaft kept failing? Interviewers are not looking for a perfect answer — they are looking at how you think. Establish assumptions, name the failure modes you are considering, and walk through your reasoning out loud. Silence is worse than an imperfect answer.

Portfolio Review

Be ready to defend every number and every decision in your portfolio. If you say a part was designed for a 3:1 safety factor, know why you chose 3:1 and not 2:1 or 5:1. If you chose a material, know the alternatives you considered and why you ruled them out. This is where most candidates who submitted impressive portfolios fall apart — they cannot speak to the engineering beneath the visuals.
